Lenten Journey
Fr Lolly told a story during the Homily at Ash Wednesday Mass that is fundamental to who we are as faith filled people. He spoke about his enthusiasm, energy, and passion to change other people when he became a priest. After many years, his zest and excitement had dwindled. He wondered why his fire was not shared amongst others. He realised that the journey is not about changing other people but looking inward and changing oneself.
Our Lenten journey can be a journey of self-discovery, a journey to find the parts of ourselves that are not our best selves and let them go, be the change the world needs, rather than asking others to be the change that is needed.
Wiradjuri land
Home Reading diaries for students in Kindergarten to Year Two have been sent home with the expectation that students will read for 10 minutes each night. Reading at home with your child is not an optional extra, it is the only homework at Trinity that is compulsory. This, I hope demonstrates how important we know it is.
Home Reading diaries for students in Years Three to Six will be sent home within the next couple of weeks. We are waiting on the order and will have them to you, with clear expectations as soon as possible. Thank you in anticipation for supporting us and spending this valuable time with your child.
Leadership Induction
There were two Year 6 students away at last weeks Leadership Induction Mass, so at our Assembly this morning we presented Angus Oldfield and Tom Bassingthwaighte with their badges.
Mrs Perryman’s highlights for the week
Charlie Jackson, Ryan Sumich, Thomas Edwards and Michael Oakley approached me earlier this week with a letter asking if I would consider allowing them to use a metal detector. I was immediately impressed with the boy’s persuasion, energy and enthusiasm and responded by letting them know that I would give the matter serious consideration. Within twenty-four hours the boys had approached me eager to hear the outcome. With great pleasure I told the boys they were able to use the metal detector and that I would meet them at lunch time to discuss safety parameters. To my absolute delight, I returned from a meeting later that day, to be greeted by three extremely excited students as they had found a 1946 shilling. Congratulations boys! I wonder what you will find next week.
Yesterday I was filled with joy when Zoe M-L and Hamish S shared their writing with me. After they read their efforts, they proceeded to question one another about the plot and suggest pathways for each other. Finally, it was decided that their stories had to be finished in a week, ready for publishing. At that point I invited the two of them to join me on a reading date. They both agreed, we opened my computer and locked in a time and date.
“Can you show us where we are in your diary?” they asked. “Of course,” and with that, they gazed at their names on the screen.
My door is always open to each of you. God bless.

Shrove Tuesday
Last Tuesday our Mini Vinnies team led a school prayer service to acknowledge Shrove Tuesday and to share information about this significant day in the Liturgical Calendar.
Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
The word 'Shrove'comes from the old word "shrive" which means to confess.
Confess means to admit you have done something wrong.
Shrove Tuesday is the day we traditionally make pancakes to get rid of any indulgences and fatty foods in the house before the beginning of Lent. In some places it is called ‘Pancake Tuesday’.
The entire school enjoyed pancakes after the prayer service.
We thank our RE Minister, Jemima Mergard, for organising pancakes to be made for the Trinity staff and Mrs Helen Stevenson for her time devoted to making the pancakes for all the Trinity students.
Ash Wednesday
This week Miss Albert and Year 3/4 led Trinity in a whole school mass to celebrate Ash Wednesday marking the beginning of the season of Lent, which is 40 days, not counting Sundays, of fasting and repentance prior to the celebration of Easter. Ash Wednesday occurs 46 days before Easter. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting.
“Repent and believe in the Gospel”
Wearing ashes on our foreheads is a tradition of repentance that comes from the Old Testament. Ashes were a way for people to be humble before God and show they were willing to make a big change in their lives. We are marked with ashes for the same reason: to show we are willing to change. The physical symbol—ashes—is for our benefit. God knows what is in our hearts; the ashes remind us to turn our hearts toward God. Lent is a time to change, to become a better version of ourselves, and to become more like Jesus. The ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday remind us of our call to repent and believe in the Gospel. The disciplines of Lent—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—help us prepare for Easter. https://www.catholic.org/lent/ashwed.php
Project Compassion
Project Compassion is Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal. Every year, countless people turn Lent into a demonstration of faith, hope and love through generosity. This week every class received a large Compassion Box for their Altar Table to raise funds for those in need. Each child has also received a family box so that we can all support Caritas in the great work that they do. We ask that you contribute any loose change you have and return your box at the end of the term. Extra boxes are available at the school office. Whatever you choose to do to help those in need this Lent will be contributing towards a more just and compassionate world.
This year’s theme is:
BE MORE
“Aspire not to have more, but to be more,”
(Saint Oscar Romero)
During the first week of Lent we hear the story of twenty-two-year-old, Jamila - a single mother, living in the world’s largest refugee camp in in Bangladesh. Visit the Caritas site to read about Jamila https://lent.caritas.org.au/week-1
Making Jesus Real (MJR)
Our Minister of Religion, Jemima Mergard came up with a wonderful initiative to make cookies with 'MJR' in-printed on them and to hand out to the MJR award recipients each week. What a lovely way to celebrate these students achievements and I'm sure the recipients will appreciate Jem's homemade cookies! Thank you Jemima.

K-2 Open House Assembly
K/1/2 presented a showcase of their learning on Friday morning. It was a delight to see the changes in technology they are discovering in History, the Days of Creation Stories and songs they have been listening to and the texts they have been exploring in Literacy. Students demonstrated their knowledge of the external features of Living Things through shadow puppetry and tested the audience on their understanding of place value through standard and non-standard partitioning. The highlight of the Open House was definitely their 'Shake Your Tail Feather' dance, in response to the text, 'Feathers for Phoebe' where we watched some very cool Blues Brothers lead the bright and colourful chicks in a fun and entertaining dance! Well done K/1/2, you have crammed so much into these first three weeks of school and, as Mrs Perryman told you all at the conclusion, you should be very proud of yourselves!
Discovery Learning
This week an enthusiastic group of Year 5 boys initiated a ‘Discovery Learning’ playtime activity, after approaching Mrs Perryman with a well written letter for permission to do so.
The activity involved the use of ‘high tech’ equipment, namely a metal detector, and sheer determination and grit to explore the hidden treasures of Trinity grounds.
This activity is a classic example of ‘Inquiry Learning’. The best part of this story is that these children initiated their own learning.
The ‘BIG FIND’ for their efforts was a 1946 penny. The boys have polished it up and it may just be the FIRST item in a future museum at Trinity.
Where to now?
In class time Miss Wade encouraged students in Year 5/6 to further their learning by finding out what was happening in Australia in 1946.
Did you know?
- 26th January – Foundation Days renamed Australia Day
- 19th July – the town of Orange, NSW, was proclaimed a city.
- 9th September – Trans Australia Airlines makes its first flight.
- The Prime Minister was Ben Chifley (who was a former train driver from Bathurst)
- The NSW Premier was William McKell
- Melbourne writer Mem Fox was born in March 1946.
- Balmain (West Tigers) defeated St. George to win the 1946 Rugby League Grand Final with the score being 13-12.
Western Region Swimming Carnival
Last Monday, 15th February, our Trinity Swim Team travelled to West Wyalong to compete in the Western Region Swimming Carnival.
Our students swam like champions and were constantly supporting their teammates and competitors from other schools in our region.
Competition is always tough at this level, but our students did their best in their heats and swam their hardest throughout the day. Many of our students were in multiple races and felt the exhaustion by the end of the day – as did their vocal support team.
We had 18 students representing at the carnival. Thank you to parents/grandparents for the commitment to travel to the carnival and the support you gave to the students in the pool.
Thank you to our parents who volunteered and helped with timekeeping on the day. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Our team representatives at the Western Region Carnival were:
Phoebe Bassingthwaighte | Melanie Beal | Billy Corkhill |
Harry Edwards | Bella Betts | Thomas Edwards |
Claire Corkhill | Bea Lucas | Michael Oakley |
Riley Jackson | Ruby Lucas | Aidan Summerfield |
Emerson Mann-Rea | Talia McKay | Toby Stevenson |
Marlie Oakley | Willow Stevenson | Hamish Summerfield |
