Year 5/6 Classroom News

Wow! What a great Maths unit enjoyed by Year 5/6. Over the past couple of weeks, the students have been exploring a unit of work on Volume. During the unit they have explored:

  • what volume and capacity is.
  • the units and formulas used in measuring and calculating volume.
  • and how/where volume is used in daily life.

During the unit, the students were given various projects to explore and develop including:

  • creating a recipe book showing uses of volume in the kitchen.
  • creating an experiment book showing the uses of volume in Science.
  • creating a game that can be played in class to develop our understanding of volume and measurement.
  • designing and building an example of a habitat, showing the volume of water required to keep the flora and fauna alive in the area - showing their understanding that the size of the habitat can influence the number of species within that habitat.

To conclude the unit, Year 5/6 were treated to a cooking session with Miss Wade, supported by Mrs Burns.

The students worked in small groups to put their knowledge and understanding of volume, and the need to use accurate measurements, to the test in cooking.

Each group was given the task to read and follow a recipe, work collaboratively in the group, and produce a quantity where the entire class would receive a portion of the final product.

They made:

  • Rocky Road Slice
  • A Yummy Chocolate Cake
  • Coconut Roughs
  • Chocolate Crackles
  • Strawberry Yogurt Slice

YUM!!!! A fun unit indeed!!

Art in Kinder/1/2

Mrs Dyball (our Prac Tecaher) had Kinder/1/2 totally immersed in all things Jackson Pollock this week. She dressed up in clothes Pollock would have worn back in the 40's, read out some of his most famous quotes and created varying viscosities with paint for us to experiment with and reflect on their effects. Art appreciation at its best! All the students had a lot of fun and went home with pretty colourful tootsies!!
