On Thursday we journeyed into space and joined over one million children across Australia and New Zealand in sharing the much-anticipated reading of GIVE ME SOME SPACE written by Philip Bunting in the National Simultaneous Storytime.  It was an intergalactic experience with the book being read by astronaut Dr Shannon Walker from the International Space Station.

The main character, Una, is a singular girl on a mission: leave boring old Earth behind for greener pastures—or in this case, planets. Smart, determined and ingenious, she crafts herself a homespun spacesuit and rocket ship, says goodbye to her goldfish and launches into the galaxy. Fascinating facts pepper the pages of Give Me Some Space! as Una revels in her extraordinary new landscape, but when she stops for a picnic on a ring of frozen rocks, she suddenly sees her home planet in a completely new way.

Una’s story of self-discovery demonstrates the power of a fresh perspective to generate real change, and her new mission (to take care of Earth!) is one every reader can get behind.

Following the reading of Give Me Some Space, Trinity students were treated to a visit from local author Ange Taylor. The incredibly talented and inspiring author read to us her newly published book, The Machinery Shed. Ange shared with us her inspiration for writing this text and gave us insight into the special characters in the text, her family in Binalong. She spent time with the children answering their questions and promised to return to Trinity in 2022 to share her next book, The Shearing Shed. "Jules I just loved it! What a beautiful bunch of kids you have! Such a nice vibe and such well behaved little cherubs. Thank you for inviting me today, I came home zinging!".

A copy of The Machinery Shed was gifted to our library and will be for sale at Mrs Doolan’s Shop, The Ohana Collection, in the coming weeks.

Don't forget its the Scholastic National Family Reading Month in May. Please keep sending in your reading pictures from home - email to julie.doolan@cg.catholic.edu.au
