Love Your Sister 5 cent Friday

Today we celebrated 'Love Your Sister 5 cent Friday' by all students coming dressed to school in bright colours and bringing all their 5 cent piece denotations.

Love Your Sister day is fundraiser day, in memory of Connie Johnson, who passed away of cancer in 2017. Trinity hosted their own fundraiser by creating a magical love-heart that was filled with five cent coins. Go Trinity! All money raised will be passed on to the medical researchers from the Love Your Sister team.

Year 5/6

In Year 5/6 this week we introduced a new Warmup called 'Sociable Cards'. Take a pack of cards and remove the Jacks, Queens and Kings. Shuffle the remaining cards, and then lay the whole pack face up on the table in a snake, like this one: Place four different coloured counters on the first four cards in the snake. Then move each counter forward the number shown on its card (Aces count as 1). Keep moving each counter until it can't go any further without going off the end.

Students were asked the questions.

Did your counters all finish on different cards? Repeat the experiment a few times.

How often did all the counters finish on different cards?

How often did they all finish on the same card?

Can you explain your results?

The children were amazed with the results and challenged with giving reasoning as to why these results occurred.

After much amazement, and a lot of challenged thinking, the students were then asked to find a way to arrange the cards so that all four counters finish on different cards.

A great activity enjoyed by all with lots of questioning and contemplation and very collaborative group discussions!
